Response to Paula's mom's letter

Here is a response to Paula's mom's letter that was published the following day in the Ottawa Citizen (click here).

By the way, somehow the ability to leave comments on the last two posts was somehow turned off...I've fixed that now.

For whatever small peace it may bring you, please know the incredible gift you've given.

My father received a heart transplant when I was eighteen. That wonderful gift (received only days before he would've died) allowed him to see me marry, my brother graduate from high school, see him married, attend my college and graduate school graduations, and meet his first two grandchildren.

He has since passed on but not one day has gone by that I don't thank God for the wonderful generosity shown by a family that I'll never meet. Out of something so horrifying came a gift so profound that it takes my breath away to think on it.

Since I'll never have the opportunity to thank our donor family directly, I'll thank you. You have no idea how much that decision means to those who are waiting, praying against all odds that an organ will come available in time.

Incidently, my father was a large Italian man. His donor was a young black man. Following his transplant my father began having memory like dreams of a black family he had never met. He also developed an appreciation for the Blues. A type of music he never previously cared for. :-)

Your dear wife lives on through the people who's lives she's saved. I hope that you can find comfort in that.

God bless you and your family.
