Paula's Star Poem

The wonder of it is:
Whatever God creates
He names.
What, after all, is the conception
of babies or stars (or anything else)
but divine love specifically naming?

She was a young woman:
Comet bright, rugby boisterous,
Laughing earth's joy, sobbing its sorrow.
Illuminating with flaring righteousness
the ordered orbits of friends and strangers,
Her passionate caring,
in turn, love-shielded by friends;
Her songs of joy and justice woven
into the universal hymn surrounding her.

She was too young!
Heaven and earth still weep
at the savage galactic gash
inflicted by her sudden eclipse,
Leaving behind
dark desolation.

Yet, the glory of it is:
She is called home,
To join the pure harmonies
of the Christ-starred cosmic chorus,
Or the perfect laughter
of an angelic frisbee match.
Eternally named!

For you, her lover,
Once named to sing her songs,
Husband, her laughter and tears,
Shelter her passion,
Nuture the fierce light
she shed upon the world,

And for you, infant treasure,
Star bones already divinely knitted and reknitted,
You who were cradled
in a more tender light,
Bathed only
in a clear maternal glow

May grief's vast black hole
Be laced with traces of cosmic laughter

May you see again the wonder and the glory.

I remember the first time meeting Paula. It was a backyard BBQ at the Whites' on Field St. Sitting in her lawnchair, Paula struck me as very intense. Not by what she said, but a quiet intensity. A look about her. We would soon get to know more of that intensity, and a fun, outgoing side too. Almost always that smile. And often playing with the kids at those get-togethers. I remember a meeting of our church's social justice group, which Paula & Darren attended a few times, and the mood was a bit sombre because of the lack of movement on adopting fair trade coffee at the church. As I recall, the discussion went on for a bit & eventually Paula, though not a member of our church, piped up that she couldn't understand why the church was holding back on this. She got a bit emotional about it; clearly this was something she felt passionately about. (I think it was just a few months later that Calvin Church started serving fair trade coffee.) We have missed Paula and "Aunt Paula" a lot. We have very good memories (toboganning, Settlers of Catan, her obvious pride & love for little Micah) and are thankful for Paula's life and witness. I wish we had gotten to know Paula -- and Paula with Darren and Micah -- more. One day....

Darren & Micah, you & your families are in our thoughts & prayers.

I love this poem. It sums her up perfectly. My 4 year old Molly saw me crying and said I shouldn't be sad because she's dancing with the angels now, and we will see her again in heaven. The simplicity of a child. Having a quiet day today, praying for you and Micah and missing you. Hope you find strength today. Alice, Jon, Molly and Finley. XX

HI Darren,
I am not sure if you remember me but I knew your family back in the London, Ont. days. I was in the same class as Laura and went to your home some Sundays after church. I went to London parental and London Christian high until we moved in grade 11to Mississauga. I heard about what you and your son, Micah ( boy does he look like the Brouwer side) went through a year ago already and have been reading your life story through the blog. I want you to know that I am praying and have been praying for you for this last year. Today must be extremely hard for you as it marks one year that your wife was taken away from both of you. I am praying for you that you find comfort and peace today and in the times ahead. Paula sounded like a real bubbly woman who loved the Lord, you and Micah. Praying that you feel the Lord's arms wrapped around you today as well as feeling the love from all your family and friends.
Blessings to you Darren,

Michelle (Exelby) Van Zeuemren

We love you very much and think of you, Micah and all the great memories of Paula on this day. She was a great friend a best friend to Heather has proven to be irreplacable.
She was an awesome gifted child of God. One we will never forget.
This is a wonderful poem of Paula. As you move on may God bless you as we all Celebrate and Remember the Life of Paula.
